The video that has sparked all the outrage in the Middle East is coming under having scrutiny, even from the White House:

A top White House official has blasted as “truly abhorrent” the anti-Islam film which appears to have triggered an outpouring of violence against U.S. diplomatic posts in Egypt and Libya.

Speaking to an international religious freedom conference in Washington Wednesday, Deputy National Security Adviser Denis McDonough endorsed efforts to create “a world where the dignity of all people—and all faiths—is respected.”

According to his prepared remarks released by the White House, he then added: “This work takes on added urgency given the truly abhorrent video that has offended so many people–Muslims, and non-Muslims alike—in our country and around the world.”

Of course this statement has outraged the right wing blogs. Here’s just a couple of examples.

Jihad Watch:

In other words, the freedom of speech is a goner.

Weasel Zippers:

The First Amendment has a bullseye on its back.

But this is not an attack on the first amendment. In fact, this is the first amendment in action. It creates the public debate. Do we really want to be viewed as a nation of intolerance and hatred?

Of course we are talking about constitutional rights and the right. These are the same people that always scream about “freedom of religion”, until a religion they don’t like or understand comes around. Think about the mosque in New York, where the right tried everything to prevent it from being built. Sorry, no freedom of religion for you.

Now don’t think that these bloggers are stupid. As matter of fact, what they are doing is really smart. They are taking a news item and creating a sound bite. Give it a few days and you’ll see it cited as an example on Facebook of how Barack Obama is getting rid of our First Amendment right. Then the lazies out there, who want any reason to not like Obama, will take it as gospel, despite what the fact checkers and common sense dictates. These are the types that there is just no arguing with. They have closed their mind to hearing anything but what they want to hear, yet they are also the ones always the most upset with government, regardless of which party is in charge.

So what we have here is another walk into the crazy season. The next month and a half are going to really nasty and the wingnuts will be fueling as much fire as they can. This is just another teaser of what is to come.
