Interesting enough, on the same week that President Bush starts a new
campaign to regain support for the war in Iraq, an article comes out in a
Turkish newspaper talking about how “Eighty two Iraqi lawmakers from across the
political spectrum have pressed for the withdrawal of the US-led occupation
troops from their country.â€ÂÂ. The article is very interesting and with the
certain biased views our local mainstream media seems to lend its self towards
today, I am more compelled to be in agreement with this article. If you would

So should we be shocked that the Iraqi’s would now want their liberators to
vacate their country? I would have to say it is no shock at all. Consider the
rash of bombings and attacks we read about and see on the evening news. They are
a daily event and killing many Iraqis. The insurgents have made a simple case
that they want the Americans and Coalition forces out. Now their efforts to push
this campaign are taking a larger toll on Iraqi citizens. It now seems as though
the Iraqi’s feel they would be more apt to handle the problem alone than with
our aide.
Remember how we were told we would go in and be praised and the Iraqi’s would
throw flowers at us as they cheer for our aide in liberating them? This was the
scene painted numerous times by the administration in the weeks leading up to
the invasion to give the American people a better acceptance of the upcoming
war. However we are now more then two years into it and we have not yet seen
this warm welcome. Now we are seeing an increasing resistance to our presence
that is costing more and more American and Iraqi lives on a daily basis.
The insurgents are not the only reason that the Iraqi people would want us
out. The fact is Baghdad has been divided into two cities now. You have normal
Baghdad, where the Iraqis live and water and electricity are a rare resource.
Then you have the green zone. This is the new Baghdad being occupied by American
contractors and citizens. This is the area they are construction a new American
embassy. Electric and water is as accessible to the green zone as it is to
Americans. It is a flourishing new city in Iraq, meant for Americans.
The major reconstruction has not even started yet, and already construction
materials are starting to sky rocket in cost. This of course will lead to higher
profits for American companies like Haliburton, while the U.S. citizens and
Iraqi people pick up the tab. This is not the picture you will read about in
your morning paper however. To hear about this, you must look through the eyes
of an actual Iraqi citizen, and you can do so by reading
Baghdad Burning where a
brave Iraqi girl blogs her life in Iraq whenever she can. Her posts are limited
and may have a span of a couple weeks. This is because she may not have power or
internet access at that time, but I do implore you to visit her blog and read
the heart wrenching stories as she sees it.
We are said to be in Iraq now to spread democracy. Well these MP’s who are
pushing this legislation for our removal are the equivalent to our House of
Representatives. They are representing the people of Iraq, ever facet of their
highly diverse religions, and they deserve to be heard. If we do not listen to
the elected representatives of the Iraqi people, then our administration has
proved that we are there as no more than occupiers. The Iraqi people are
accepting democracy and now using it to try and get the United States to leave.
Our military has given life and limb in order to assure the people of Iraqi have
a say in their future, and if we do not listen then what is our true purpose
there?
