The Plan Boehner Pushed On National Television Is Rejected By His Own Party

Posted 7/27/11 at 9:18am by jamie

Monday night, House Speaker John Boehner took to the airwaves to taught his deficit reduction plan. Of course the left didn't like this plan, but they aren't alone:

The debt ceiling deal introduced by Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) would save, by one measure, roughly $850 billion over the course of ten years and just $1 billion in 2012 -- two metrics unlikely to satisfy the most conservative members of his conference.

The Congressional Budget Office, which is the official scorekeeper of legislation, released its analysis of the Budget Control Act of 2011 on Tuesday afternoon. The findings were damaging enough that an hour later, Boehner's office told reporters it would rewrite the bill to achieve a more favorable scoring. Hours after that, GOP leadership announced it was delaying a vote on the plan until Thursday.

Measured against March 2011 government expenditure levels, the Boehner proposal, as currently written, would reduce the deficit by $850 billion during the next decade, according to the CBO. Measured against January 2011 government spending levels, the bill would reduce budget deficits by roughly $1.1 trillion during that same time period.

And it isn't just the "most conservative" corners of his party rejecting this plan. We see Americans as a whole wanting something more along the lines of an Obama plan than a Boehner plan:

Most Americans would like to see a mix of spending cuts and tax increases be part of a deal to raise the debt ceiling, a new poll finds, aligning the majority with President Barack Obama's position.

Will Bachmann Close The Door On Palin?

Posted 6/14/11 at 7:33am by jamie

The first major debate of the 2012 Republican Presidential primaries took place last night and the big news came from Michele Bachmann:

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, an outspoken Republican with close ties to the tea party, announced Monday that she is running for president, a candidacy that could further shake up a volatile fight for the GOP nomination.

The first female contender to enter the 2012 race, Bachmann announced her bid during a Republican presidential debate in New Hampshire. The third-term Minnesota congresswoman has been leaning heavily toward a run over the past few months, visiting early primary states, raising money and railing against President Barack Obama.

After watching the debate, I must say Bachmann came off really well. Sure she is still a major right-wing loon that scares the living hell out of me, but she came off as a right-wing Presidential loon, which is something I could never say about Sarah Palin.

Bachmann attacked every question thrown at her. She didn't play the wink and smile game, but rather held herself in a way that should make most women proud. She didn't resort to little winks and one-liners. She tackled the issues, and while I might not agree with her positions, she did do a good job at selling them. She was coming off as the anti-Palin.

Given her performance, that means Bachmann must not be underestimated. We need to remember that while Bachmann is a well known name to those of us who follow politics, she is still relatively unknown to the larger populace. That means she has time to refine the image and do damage control on her past statements.

Helping Our Enemies In The Financial Jihad

Posted 5/23/11 at 8:55am by jamie

One of the long known goals of Osama bin Laden was to financially break the United States:

A key facet of bin Laden's anti-American warfare has always been economic. It's a lesson he drew from the Afghan-Soviet war, in which he first served as a financier of mujahidin efforts and then as a fighter. He watched the Soviet Union withdraw from Afghanistan in defeat and then dissolve altogether in 1991. Bin Laden asserted on multiple occasions that the mujahidin were responsible for destroying the Soviet empire. Whether or not he's right, he clearly believed that the high costs imposed by the Afghan-Soviet war prevented the Soviet Union from adapting to other challenges, such as grain shortages and a collapse in world oil prices.

When you consider the hundreds of billions we spend every year in defense, including a large chunk of money just for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and couple that with our dwindling economy, we can see this is one goal he might achieve, though he didn't live to see it.

Thinking of that makes stories like this all the more infuriating:

Hard-charging Republicans who rallied voters last year with cries of "Stop the spending, ban the earmarks" are quietly offering a more familiar Washington refrain now they're in Congress – not in my backyard.

FLASHBACK: In 2008 John McCain Blasted Obama For Saying He Would Hunt Osama Into Pakistan

Posted 5/2/11 at 1:21pm by jamie

There is so much spin and rewriting of history this morning that my head is ready to explode. I think it’s time for a quick refresher on what lead us up to this victorious point today, including how the Republican presidential candidate in 2008 went after then candidate Obama when it came of Osama bin Laden.

The following is from the transcript of the October 7, 2008 debate between John McCain and Barack Obama in Nashville.

QUESTION: Should the United States respect Pakistani sovereignty and not pursue al Qaeda terrorists who maintain bases there, or should we ignore their borders and pursue our enemies like we did in Cambodia during the Vietnam War?

OBAMA: [snip]

But I do believe that we have to change our policies with Pakistan. We can't coddle, as we did, a dictator, give him billions of dollars and then he's making peace treaties with the Taliban and militants.

What I've said is we're going to encourage democracy in Pakistan, expand our nonmilitary aid to Pakistan so that they have more of a stake in working with us, but insisting that they go after these militants.

And if we have Osama bin Laden in our sights and the Pakistani government is unable or unwilling to take them out, then I think that we have to act and we will take them out. We will kill bin Laden; we will crush Al Qaida. That has to be our biggest national security priority.

The response John McCain gave to this was:

MCCAIN: You know, my hero is a guy named Teddy Roosevelt. Teddy Roosevelt used to say walk softly -- talk softly, but carry a big stick. Senator Obama likes to talk loudly.

In fact, he said he wants to announce that he's going to attack Pakistan. Remarkable.

Bob Schieffer Slams Trump

Posted 4/27/11 at 8:28pm by jamie

Bob Schieffer, far from being some member of the “liberal media”, tonight accused Trump’s assertion of bordering on racism:

Donald Trump has moved on from the "birther" conspiracy to allege President Barack Obama didn't get good enough grades to warrant entry to Harvard Law School, an assertion that CBS News chief Washington correspondent Bob Schieffer called absurd on the "CBS Evening News" on Wednesday.

Lunatic Apocalypse–A Black Man Was Born In America And Became President!

Posted 4/27/11 at 10:55am by jamie

This morning the White House decided it was time to take a Hiroshima style offensive tactic against the lunatics on the right and release President Obama’s birth certificate.

In 2008, in response to media inquiries, the President’s campaign requested his birth certificate from the state of Hawaii. The state sent the campaign the President’s birth certificate, the same legal documentation provided to all Hawaiians as proof of birth in state, and the campaign immediately posted it on the internet. That birth certificate can be seen here (PDF).

When any citizen born in Hawaii requests their birth certificate, they receive exactly what the President received. In fact, the document posted on the campaign website is what Hawaiians use to get a driver’s license from the state and the document recognized by the Federal Government and the courts for all legal purposes. That’s because it is the birth certificate. This is not and should not be an open question.

Imagine That! Scott Walker Admits Eliminating Collective Bargaining Does NOT Save Money

Posted 4/16/11 at 9:00am by jamie

Us on the left have been saying this all along and now the man in the spotlight of the “War Against Labor” has admitted it – eliminating collective bargaining does not save money!

Like a dog going at a bone, U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, didn't stop until he got the answer he was looking for from Gov. Scott Walker during the governor's testimony Thursday before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Kucinich said he could not understand how Walker's bill to strip most collective bargaining rights from nearly all public workers saved the state any money and therefore was relevant to the topic before the committee, which was state and municipal debt.

[SNIP]

"How much money does it save Gov. Walker?" Kucinich demanded. "Just answer the question."

"It doesn't save any," Walker said.

Again – the reason for this law was purely political. The right didn’t like the unions supporting Barack Obama in 2008, so instead of trying to find ways to appeal to organized labor, the right decides to hurt them.

Still don’t believe it? Well just ask Wisconsin Senate Majority Leader, Scott Fitzgerald.

House Republicans Pass Obamacare For Seniors!

Posted 4/15/11 at 2:40pm by jamie

The House has just passed the Ryan budget plan:

The House has passed a Republican budget blueprint proposing to fundamentally overhaul Medicare for future beneficiaries while combating out-of-control budget deficits. It would impose sharp spending cuts on social safety net programs like food stamps and Medicaid.

The GOP proposal passed 235-193, with every Democrat voting "no." The nonbinding plan lays out a fiscal vision cutting $6.2 trillion over 10 years from the budget submitted by President Barack Obama.

The “Medicare Overhaul” was described like this:

"It's exactly like Obamacare," said NRSC chairman Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) in the Capitol Thursday. "It is. It's exactly like it. Which strikes me as bizarre that you're seeing so much pushback [from Democrats]."

So when will we see all the outrage in townhalls? When will seniors be yelling to “stay of my Medicare”?

Perhaps they need a reminder that the last time the Republicans screwed with Medicare, they ended up going months without getting medication and then found out about the great “doughnut hole” the Republicans created as a giveaway to big pharma.

Who Wants To Eliminate Popular Deductions?

Posted 4/15/11 at 12:45pm by jamie

The blindness of the right is mindboggling at times. Over at Hot Air, Ed Morrissey has a post up entitled “Taxpayers to Obama: Keep your hands off our deductions”. Here’s what Ed says:

In his speech on Wednesday, Barack Obama suggested that eliminating some tax deductions might be necessary to close the budget deficit, at least on a means-tested basis.  Gallup’s latest poll taken after the speech shows the political risk in pushing that idea.  Large majorities support the deductions Obama mentioned in the speech, even when told it would help close the federal budget deficit:

But when you look at what part of the Gallup article Ed quotes, you see something totally different:

Americans make it clear they want to keep common federal income tax deductions, regardless of whether the proposed elimination of those deductions is framed as part of a plan to lower the overall income tax rate or as a way to reduce the federal budget deficit. No more than one in three Americans favor eliminating any of the deductions in either scenario. …

Budget plans that call for lower overall tax rates, such as the one proposed by Rep. Paul Ryan, would essentially require that popular deductions be eliminated, basically trading off one tax break for another. President Obama’s commission on deficit reduction last December called for eliminating deductions, including the one for mortgage interest, as part of its plan (ultimately rejected) to reduce the federal budget deficit.

The Wingnuts Get Pwn3d Again

Posted 3/29/11 at 8:16am by jamie

Yesterday the right-wing blogosphere erupted with posts of the greatest scandal of the 21st century:

Last Thursday evening at Montclair State University, with a video camera rolling, Bill Ayers volunteered that yes indeed he had written the acclaimed Barack Obama memoir, Dreams from My Father.

Unprompted, Ayers also noted that while Dreams deserves its praise, Obama's second opus, Audacity of Hope, is "more of a political hack book."

Not surprisingly, Ayers retreated into irony as he ended the session. "Yeah, yeah," he said after confirming again that he wrote Dreams, "And if you help me prove it, I'll split the royalties with you. Thank you very much."

This has been on ongoing conspiracy of the right for years, so it isn’t shocking that they would jump on this like kids to the tree on Christmas morning. As matter of fact, you can check this thread out on Memeorandum and see how many of the right wing blogs posted this with absolute giddiness.

But here’s the problem. If you watch the video, you see that Ayers is obviously giving a sarcastic response. I would have done the same thing if I were in his position. You get hammered day after day by some crapspiracy theory, you finally just say “fuck it” and play along. But that didn’t stop the right from eating this up as some big got ya against Obama. Well except for a few, which I must give credit to, like Dan Riehl.

Haven’t We Seen This Game Before?

Posted 3/25/11 at 8:29am by jamie

Erick Erickson on CNN:

here is not in any way, shape, or form any rational explanation for the United States engaged in Libya to do nothing except for one I can think of — Barack Obama's re-election.

Suddenly Obama can look Presidential again — all through manufacturing the need for American involvement where there was no need. Barack Obama wants to be re-elected. The best playbook for his re-election is that of Bill Clinton. But Clinton had a government shutdown and Kosovo. In the absence of either, Barack Obama must manufacture them.

And he has.

From a 1998 Washington Post article:

In August 1998, when [Clinton] ordered missile strikes in an effort to kill Osama bin Laden, there was widespread speculation — from such people as Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) — that he was acting precipitously to draw attention away from the Monica S. Lewinsky scandal, then at full boil. Some said he was mistaken for personalizing the terrorism struggle so much around bin Laden. And when he ordered the closing of Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House after domestic terrorism in Oklahoma City, some Republicans accused him of hysteria.

Whenever a Democrat takes military action, the right takes to their aluminum foil hats to create any conspiracy theory they can. Of course Erickson is one of those that still believes we found WMD in Iraq, despite the Bush administration even admitting we never did. Aren’t you glad he works for the “most trusted name in news”?

Trouble For Mitt And Newt

Posted 3/16/11 at 9:28am by jamie

The two top contenders for the 2012 GOP Presidential nod are facing increased hostility in the GOP electorate a new poll from PPP finds. Here’s some of the interesting numbers:

  • 20% find that Romney’s Mormon religion is a problem.
  • 30% Believe that Newt’s three divorces are a disqualifier.
  • 61% won’t vote for Romney because of Romney-care.

The poll was conducted amongst likely GOP voters and the last number is very problematic for Romney. Romney-care was something instituted on the state level. Think about the main complaint of the mandate in Obama care when it comes to Republicans – that the mandate should be handled on the state level. With close to 2/3rds of GOP voters opposing Romney for instituting a mandate on the state level, it shows that Republicans are against the mandate all together and saying the federal government “over reached” was nothing more than a strawman.

And speaking of Strawmen, the poll has some other interesting information tucked away in it:

One other note from our Republican primary poll- GOP voters think that the ACORN threat has gone down significantly. In November of 2009 we found 52% of Republicans thought ACORN had stolen the election for Barack Obama in 2008. Now only 25% think the organization will steal the election for him again next year, while 43% think it will not and 32% aren't sure yet.

Now 25% may seem like a high percentage to think that an organization no longer in existence will manage to steal a Presidential election but it's less than half the number who thought that two years ago.

Among Republicans who think ACORN will steal the election their top choice for the nomination is Palin at 20%, followed by Gingrich at 19%, and Huckabee and Romney at 16%.

Time To Man Up, Mr. President

Posted 1/20/11 at 12:36pm by jamie

There has been a lot of talk that President Obama might be open to some sort of deal to cut Social Security benefits. Well that is a very bad idea:

President Barack Obama's apparent willingness to consider cuts in Social Security benefits may be winning him points with Washington elites, but it's killing him with voters, who see the program as inviolate and may start to wonder what the Democratic Party stands for, if not for Social Security.

That's the conclusion of three top progressive pollsters who spoke to reporters Wednesday at a briefing sponsored by the Economic Policy Institute, the Century Foundation and Demos.

Even more interesting is that the poll is finding the public not trusting the Democrats on Social Security as much as they did before, while the trust in Republicans is on the rise. During that time frame we saw Republicans going out to the angry town halls and saying that they would not touch Social Security. Of course those of us who really follow politics know that is far from the truth. This was just another example of “snake oil salesman” tactics by the GOP.

So hopefully we won’t hear the President talk about Social Security at the SOTU next week. If he does then he should lay out a plan to restore all the borrowed money to the system and legislation that will prevent lawmakers from using the money for anything they want. That is our money and it should be kept as such.

Boehner Drinks It Up During The Tucson Memorial Service

Posted 1/13/11 at 7:45am by jamie

This guy has absolutely no morals at all:

Speaker John Boehner will host a cocktail party for the Republican National Committee at the same time that President Barack Obama will be addressing the nation at the memorial service for victims of the Tucson shooting.

The Ohio Republican is holding a 7 p.m. cocktail reception Wednesday night for 168 RNC members, who are in the Washington area for an annual meeting. The event is sponsored by Boehner’s political action committee and will take place at Maryland’s National Harbor resort

I think the RNC would fully understand if Boehner would have bowed out of the event because of the incident this weekend. He is the leader of the people’s House after all. This is just another indication of what a piss-poor leader John Boehner is.

Federal Judge: Healthcare Mandates Unconstitutional

Posted 12/13/10 at 12:20pm by jamie

Can’t say I’m surprised by this:

A federal judge in Virginia ruled Monday that the individual mandate contained in the health care law passed by Congress and signed by President Barack Obama this year is unconstitutional.

The judge found in favor of Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, who brought this suit separately from the other state Attorney Generals suing the federal government over the law.

I personally have been against these mandates since their inception. Requiring the people to purchase a product from a company really seems to go against everything this country stands for. I know some try to use the “auto insurance” example, but that doesn’t fair. You can choose not to drive, but choosing not to live – well that is also illegal.
