In a sad farewell to diplomacy, today George Bush did what he promised. He has installed John Bolton as our ambassador to the UN. The man who not only lied to Senate but also has unquestionably been abusive to subordinates is now our man sitting at the head of diplomacy.

Bush has taken the stance that it is Democrats alone not wanting Bolton to hold the post. In fact, Bolton didn’t even make it to the floor with committee approval. One Republican – George Voinovich of Ohio was out spoken in his disapproval of Bolton.

This is just another example how it is Bush’s way and no other way. Instead of searching for another appointee when this one became so controversial, Bush stuck by his man and gave him the job. Remember it was a report co-authored by Bolton in 2000 that said the United States needed another “Perl Harbor” style attack in order to gain support for invading Iraq.

Sadly we can kiss diplomacy at the United Nations good bye. John Bolton will surely do everything in his power to undermine process and legislation within the United Nations in order to get what he wants done. He has already done this in the past, and the UN called his actions illegal. Nothing will stop it now.
