education and social programs. The bill was defeated because it would actually
hurt the nation’s poor. Twenty-two republican’s, mostly moderates, joined the
Democrats to defeat the bill.

This is just further signs of the GOP unity failing. One big factor could be
the President’s approval rating, which as of today was 34% according to the
