I have one great advantage as a blogger this coming election. My U.S. Representative is John Boehner and this is one race that will gain national attention. Up until about a month ago, Boehner was going unopposed in his bid for reelection. That changed though and I would like to take some time to get everyone familiar with the person taking Boehner on.

I had a chance to meet Mort Meier last night and he is a great choice to challenge the corrupt majority leader. He is running a unique style campaign, which I will go into more detail on in a bit.

Mort is a retired bond underwriter who challenged Boehner in the 2000 primary. Now I know your thinking “wait a minute, if he challenged him in a primary then isn’t he a Republican?” Well he was. In 2000 Meier was running as a Republican because that was his party of choice. “Once George Bush got into office I got out of the Republican party” Meier told a crowded meeting of the Butler County (Ohio) Democrat Party last night.

One issue Meier is strong on is campaign financing. He is trying to run a cost effective campaign and limiting contributions to $5.00. He is working hard on making the point that Boehner is synonymous with corruption and pointing out his ties to big tobacco companies.

An interesting approach Meier has taken is making his own flyers he passes out while on the campaign trail. “If you got a computer and a printer you can get information out” Meier proclaimed. He has done just that. He is also urging people to use the power of the internet to investigate his competition. The following is from the flyer Meier passed out:

Who Is John Boehner?

Ohio 8th Congressional District Incumbent and new House Leader

“Tobacco John” Boehner, was born and raised in Cincinnati. He is a partner in Nucite Sales LP, which is listed only in the 2006 “Business to Business” Cincinnati phone directory. There is now available to all voters in the 8th district a wealth of information about eight term incumbent Boehner and his record by accessing the internet and using Google or Yahoo search engines and simple two-word search terms such as:

  • boehner tobacco
  • boehner corruption
  • boehner graft
  • boehner bribery

What amazes me about Meier is the fact he is running an old fashion style campaign using new technologies. He does not want big companies paying for his vote. He is running to represent the people of Ohio’s 8th and not the corporations. That is a rare breed in today’s Washington.

Boehner’s ignoring the people in this district, and particularly the seniors with questions about the new Medicare program, has put Meier in a great advantage. I say that because Meier is also a senior. He has felt the changes as well as his family and Ohio’s 8th has a large base of seniors. Boehner’s office would not even talk to seniors on the issue until Meier got in the race and some bad press ran against the new Medicare program. This is more proof that Boehner does not care for the people.

Boehner even said on Meet the Press a few weeks ago that when he was helping out Indian tribes represented by Abramoff he was doing so as their representative. Ohio’s 8th has less than 1% Indians in it , including yours truly. The tribes Boehner was representing are not even indigenous to this area. In other words, his support was for sale. He was not representing the Indians in his area, he was representing the Indians that were tied to Abramoff.

Seniors comprise of 14% of Ohio’s 8th district. How did Boehner represent them? I wish I had an answer, but in fact I don’t. If by representing, it means ignoring their pleas for help when they could not get vital medications then I guess you could count that.

I will be spot lighting more on Mort Meier throughout the year. With viewership increasing every day to IntoxiNation, I want to be able to help get a candidate who is not tied to business put into Congress.

If anyone out there has a chance to meet their candidates who are running against Republican incumbents this fall and would like to write something about them then please contact me via the contact us link under “information” on the top menu. I will be more than happy to let you write something and put it on IntoxiNation so people can learn more about our candidates. We are all in this together and need to help these people out anyway we can.
