Screw Everything – Discrimination Is More Important!

What amazes me is that the Republicans are so worried about politicking that they are willing to back-burner the entire country to take up the issue of gay marriage this week. When I think of the problems surrounding our country; Iraq, healthcare, FEMA, energy crisis, immigration, record level deficits – just to name a few, it is no wonder that the Republicans have shown they are the party of Republican’ts.

While they are spending their time in the coming weeks to debate an amendment to our constitution that will meet a certain demise, they are hoping to motivate the far-right Christian base of their party. Any one on the right who buys into this is a fool. The Republicans have been promising things like banning gay marriage since they took over in 1994. So why are they so interested in it now? If you don’t know the answer to that then it is time to wake up.

The Republicans are facing the challenge of their life this year to keep control of Congress. Their poll numbers have sunk to all time lows and even the conservative base is losing faith in them. Now the Republicans have decided they need to dangle a vision of “hope” in the face of the far-right once again.

Newt Gingrich did the same thing when he orchestrated the take over in 1994. The Christian right was upset because issues most important to them were not put into the “contract with America”. Newt countered this anger by telling the Christian right’s leaders “hey just go along with us then you will get what you want”. Well here it is 12 years later and they are still treating the Christian right like their little puppets. The fact that this issue is being discussed in our Senate at such a delicate time in our nation’s history is a mockery of our government. Even worse is if the Christian right buys into this purest form of pandering and exploitation of their beliefs.

So what should we on the left do? Well, in my opinion, we should let the right continue to act like fools. If they want to ignore the operation of our country and the security of our troops then they will be the ones who answer for it. We are not talking about a simple bill in which all Republicans can simply pass. We are talking about a Constitutional Amendment that requires 66 Senators and 2/3rds of the House to approve. That means just for Senate to pass it they must get every single Republican to vote for it AND THEN muster up the vote of 11 Democrats. Sorry but I do not see that happening.

As far as the Christian right is concerned, well if they believe for one minute that the Republican party is truly in support of this and want to see it passed then they are extremely mistaken. Like a john that flashes a hundred dollar bill in front of a hooker, the Christian right is too being pimped out for a profit – a hopeful profit of votes.
