Could This Become Our October Surprise?

There is no doubt that people are predicting an October Surprise this year. I have heard numerous ideas of what it might be ranging from the capture or killing of Osama to a drastic decrease in gas prices. While the later is seeming to come rather early, we are still left wondering what it could be.

Now here we are with September knocking down the door, and I believe I might have found the first major clue into what our October Surprise might entail. It starts with Donald Rumsfeld and his comments yesterday to the American Legion where he decided to equate people who disagrees with the administration’s Iraq policy with those who questioned the threat of Nazism early last century. If you are unaware of the turmoil this has created then wake up. It has been all the talk of the day on every news channel, but don’t despair because John has the video up.

So what does Rummy’s comments yesterday have to do with an October Surprise? Everything in my mind. I am beginning to wonder if this is the start of setting the stage for the big pre-election fireworks show. Think back over the first part of this year where we heard countless generals call for Rumsfeld resignation and those calls were even echoed on both sides of the congressional floor.

Think about the tricks this White House has resorted to and (more importantly) the puppeteer pulling the strings behind the curtain – Karl Rove. Perhaps the idea is to get their message out, create a bunch of outrage over the delivery of that message then kill (or fire or ask for his resignation) the messenger. This could become one of the slickest, as well as sleaziest, moves in political history. Democrats need to start planning for this move if it does happen and then ask why such a nasty political game was played at the cost of the lives of our soldiers and the lives of thousands of Iraqi civilians. Make no mistake about it – I highly suspect this could be a glimpse into the future.

On this subject, Keith Olbermann did one helluva commentary tonight about Rumsfeld’s little fascism comments (I got the video up at Crooks and Liars). He showed how the very comments of Rumsfeld echoed the comments of such other historical figures – ie: McCarthy. Rumsfeld wants to equate the people who question the war in Iraq with being terrorist appeasers. Well he has just equated a majority of this country in those comments. Bush can sit back and say he does not question people who question his policies all he wants, but the truth is Rumsfeld speaks for Bush, and Bush’s military policy in particular. We are a democracy and a nation that is suppose to be “free”. How in the hell can we brag about freedom when we are attacked by our leaders for questioning their failed policies? We can’t and the people who are leading the country by this policy of trying to quiet dissent must be removed at once. We are in a war against terrorism and all the words of people like Rumsfeld does is embolden our enemies. It shows that the reason they attacked us (according to Bush) is being stripped away from the fabric of our nation.
