Note to the Media – Oversight is not Payback!

Last night during Anderson Cooper, I finally had it. I heard the following statement for the millionth time yesterday and blew up:

Will the Democrats start investigations to get back at Republicans?

Since when is oversight, as provided by the Constitution, some sort of “payback”? This is the new meme the so-called “liberal” media is using. They are already making it sound like any investigations the Democrats launch will be strictly for payback purposes.

This is not just insulting to the Democrats, but also to the very process of our democracy. During the 90’s, the media never coined the 50+ investigations into Clinton as “payback”. Now it is?

The Iraq war has gone on longer than World War 2. To make matters even worse, the Iraq war has seen less oversight than any other war in the history of our country. Don’t the 3,000 American soldiers and countless Iraqi’s who have lost their lives in this war deserve some serious attention from our Congress? This attention should have been given time and time again, but the Republicans refused to do so. The American people realized this gross negligence by one branch of our government, and voted to change that branch. If the Democrats don’t investigate, then they will be as guilty as the Republicans of ignoring their constitutional duty.

We hear constantly of some sort of “liberal bias” in our media. Well this new meme proves that “liberal bias” is nothing more than a myth. The media has been in Iraq and reporting how horrible it is, yet they want to make it sound like some sort of high-school game of “payback” if the Democrats do about the only thing they really can – hold investigations?

After the Death of Gerald Ford, we heard his views on Iraq. He shared the same views as every other living President in this country, except Bush 41. He shared the same views as a growing number of Republicans in Congress. Most are now starting to say that this war has been managed very badly, and the reasons for this war are possibly illegal. Does Anderson Cooper or anyone else in the media feel that a possible illegal activity merits investigation? If they don’t, then I suggest they read our Constitution, because that precious document feels it merits investigations. As matter of fact, it demands it.

I would have been willing to write this off as a “poor choice of words”, if it wasn’t something I have heard time and time again over the past few months. I have even heard other liberal bloggers stay clear of using terms like investigation, subpoena, and impeachment simply because they are afraid the right will jump all over it. Well, these same people are sadly mistaken.

In our form of government, the President is the Commander in Chief of our armed forces. He calls the shots and makes the plans. Not Congress! Congress has a duty to oversee the decisions of the President to make sure they are in the best interest of our country and of our laws. This means that the Democrats have to conduct oversight and hearings in order to employ that constitutional duty. They have no other option. Bush has already stated publicly that he will continue to do what he is doing, even if Laura and Barney were his only supporters. That is the most dangerous line of thought that any world leader can take. It is the same way that Kim Jong-Il and Ahmadinejad think. Now how dangerous does it sound?

The Democrats must act on this. They must hold hearings, and if they find that Bush has in fact broken laws, then he must stand trial. If he is convicted then he must be removed from office. Article 2, section 4 of our Constitution if probably one of the clearest sections written and that is exactly what it says.
