Pajamas Media Goes To Eternal Bed

I’m not going to dance on the grave of the right wing blogging collaborate. It looks like enough people already are, including right wing blogs, but it does merit mentioning that Pajamas Media is closing up show. I got to say that it isn’t shocking, and it wouldn’t shock me one bit if this is just the start. We are in economic hard times and advertising revenue is drying up big time. Google is reporting losses from their advertising arm, which helps support a lot more sites than just blogs.

As much as I wanted to be wrong, I have thought we would see things like this happening. The past few years we have seen more and more blogs pop-up, and more and more of those bloggers taking on blogging as a fulltime job. It is a dangerous gamble to play, especially in a world of constantly changing technologies that can drive up your costs.

But as much as it is said to see happen, perhaps it is also good. The blogosphere seems to have become more bloat. Originally blogging was supposed to be about an individuals ideas, thoughts and experiences. We have seen it evolve into group blogging and organized messaging. Blogging has lost a lot of the originality it once had. That’s why I have always prided myself to resist temptation and keep this blog as my own little personal hobby. I am not a member of any of the larger blogging groups/networks out there. I don’t solicite advertising or donations. What I get from advertising covers my costs, if I’m lucky. If people choose to click the donate button and send me a buck or two, well that might be a drink when I’m out. If no one does, it’s no threat. I will always be here, until I get tired of it or die.

So maybe we will start seeing better blogging out there. I know I bash the right a lot, but it seems like if one of the Pajamas Media blogs had some story then they all jumped on it, singing the same tune. I think a perfect example of that was Ashley Judd last fall, the girl who claimed she got assaulted for being an Obama supporter and had a B carved in her face. All the Pajamas Media blogs instantly jumped on that story, taking it as 100% truth. Well all but Malkin, who I even commended for using her senses instead of what was coming from the pulpit when blogging about the story.

This won’t be the end of blogging for either side of the spectrum. What will happen is a good cleansing. Every industry needs that once in awhile. Only the strongest sites will survive, or those that are true to the meaning of blogging.
