An Update On Lieberman's Server Woes

So I had some time to kill and decided to look into Joe’s old hosting company, myhostcamp.com, which was where his site was originally hosted when his so called “hack” occurred. First we turn to a simple whois on that domain. Domains by Proxy, Inc. DomainsByProxy.com 15111 N. Hayden Rd., Ste 160, PMB 353 Scottsdale, […]

There are a couple of really interesting things in this whois. This is a “hosting company” that has chosen to hide their contact information in their domain registration file. Now I have done the same thing because I am an individual, but for an actual hosting company to do this is rather odd. Let me expand on that. I am hosted through Lypha and here is the whois information on them:

Registrant:

You get their office number and phone number with a whois. This is good practice in case something odd seems to be happening from your servers. Myhostcamp does not have this information, and considering that their site is down now that means people have no way of contacting them unless they have their contact information written down. Pretty sad for a “hosting company”.

That is not the most interesting part though. The name servers is what really makes it interesting. Let me show you.

Here are the name servers for my hosting company:

NS2.LYPHA.COM 70.85.77.72
NS.LYPHA.COM 70.85.77.71

And the name servers for myhostcamp.com:

NS1.THEPLANET.COM
NS2.THEPLANET.COM

You notice that my hosting company, Lypha, has name servers that point to their own servers. Now look at myhostcamp and theirs points to theplanet.com. Now let’s check the ip for myhostcamp.com

myhostcamp.com
Official name: myhostcamp.com
IP address: 69.56.129.130

Now let’s do a whois on that IP address:

OrgName: ThePlanet.com Internet Services, Inc.
OrgID: TPCM
Address: 1333 North Stemmons Freeway
Address: Suite 110
City: Dallas
StateProv: TX
PostalCode: 75207
Country: US

Again theplanet.com So what does all this mean? Well it is very simple. The planet offers reseller accounts. This is where you basically pay to lease a dedicated server from their datacenter and in turn you can sub-lease the space off of that server for other sites. As Kos pointed out, there are 74 sites hosted off of Myhostcamp.com. That was 74 websites coming off of a single computer.

What this shows is that the person who did Lieberman’s technical consulting did take the time to look into the hosting company they were going with. Considering the limited bandwidth and processor usage Lieberman got on his package and the price he was paying for it, he was in a sense getting screwed. As far as my myhostcamp, well 74 sites at $15 a month comes to $1,110 a month. The most expensive server theplanet has is $439 a month. That gives you unlimited bandwidth per month. I doubt that myhostcamp even had that big of a package. I would say they went with one of the smaller ones.
