Ohio Representative Responds To Use Of
His QuoteOhio Congresswoman Jean Schmidt refused to say more Monday night about
her comments that ignited a firestorm in Washington. However, the man she quoted, Ohio Representative Danny Bubp, is talking.
Schmidt spoke during a debate over a proposal by Congressman John Murtha
to withdraw U.S. forces from Iraq in six months.“He asked me to send Congress a message: Stay the course,” said
Jean Schmidt. “He also asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message,
that cowards cut and run, Marines never do. Danny and the rest of America
and the world want the assurance from this body, that we will see this
through.”Schmidt later withdrew her remark, and said it wasn’t meant as a personal
attack.Local 12 Reporter Shawn Ley spoke with Bubp Monday night near Bubp’s home
in West Union.Bubp tells Local 12 that he, in no way, asked Schmidt to deliver that
bombshell of a message to Congressman Murtha. In fact, he says he wishes she
would have left his name out of it.Bubp tells Local 12 he did call Schmidt last week as a constituent, to
urge her to vote against the resolution to get our military out of Iraq. He
says he was shocked when Schmidt used his name on the House floor, directing
his words toward another member of Congress.“I never had any idea she would use my name,” said Representative Bubp.
“It’s unfortunate she used my name. There is no way I, or Jean Schmidt,
would impugn this gentleman. I’m not upset with her, I would have used
different terminology. Murtha is a war hero, a patriot. I won’t be drawn
into this.”The controversy was the topic of conversations at a diner just outside
West Union Monday night. Not many of the customers there think either
Schmidt or Bubp called the Congressman a coward.“She got reelected right then as far as I’m concerned when she said
that,” said Harold Ahrman. “I voted for her before and I will again.”“I think she was right in what she said and she should never apologize,”
said Shirley Ahrman.Bubp says he is not upset with Jean Schmidt, and has not tried to call
her to ask her why she used his name to make that statement.Local 12 has tried contacting Congresswoman Schmidt many times during the
past few days. Each time, she has refused to talk with us.
It’s ironic that Schmidt is dodging the calls of channel 12. You would think
she would want to get on the airwaves to her local constituents and clear her
name as quick as possible. I guess she is still worried about the aftershocks of
her words last week.
It is also worth mentioning that Bubp is not just a Marine but he is also a
right wing hack. He lead the fight to try and get the 10 comandments displayed
in front of a high school in Adams county Ohio back in the late 90’s.
