Weird. Weird. It’s so weird, the trial balloon foisted by State Senate Majority Leader Michael Waddoups, R-Taylorsville, that would establish a law enforcement database to track the identity of anyone having an alcoholic drink at a bar or restaurant.

Let’s make this clear: It’s not government’s business to track which adults drink what or where they drink. Creating a law enforcement database is not an acceptable alternative to the current “private club{[}]amp;quot; system.

We wonder if Waddoups or State Sen. John Valentine, R-Orem, who also pitched this wacky scheme, fancy themselves as sort of futuristic crime fighters in the mold of Philip K. Dick’s “Minority Report,” in which “criminals” were captured before laws were broken.

Why is it always Utah? Here’s a thought. Let’s go ahead and make D.C. an actual state (or Puerto Rico for that matter) and kick Utah out of the union. It seems like they don’t want to be very democratic anyways.
