On the weekend that Bill Frist won the Southern Republicans straw poll to be the Presidential nominee in 2008, we find out that his predecessor is now talking about a run for the Oval Office in 08.

Former Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle, accusing the GOP of spreading a message of fear, says he is considering a 2008 presidential bid.

“I haven’t ruled anything out or anything in at this point,” Daschle said in an interview Saturday night after a hometown dinner in his honor.

“I’m encouraged by the strong support many people have voiced for my candidacy around the country and in South Dakota. I’ll make a decision at some point later on this year,” he said.

Daschle said President Bush and Republicans have overemphasized the importance of the war on terror, and he said the U.S. is no safer now than it was before the Iraq invasion.

“This country is not more secure when a president infers that he is above the law and can wiretap and eavesdrop on average citizens,” he said. “We’re not more secure when we turn ports over to foreign countries.”

I think Daschle would be the perfect choice for the Democrats in 2008. He showed great leadership skills while he was Senate Majority leader and even provoked the Republicans to do some “sleazy” actions to insure he didn’t get re-elected.

Daschle also hit the nail on the head when he talked about the state of our nation when it comes to national security. Today when Sen. Feingold mentioned his censor motion, Bill Frist’s immediate response was “what was interesting in listening to my good friend-Russ, is that he mentioned protecting the American people only one time”. Yeah we know that the Republicans love to bring up national security. They talk about it none stop because they love to lead by fear. Sadly though the problem is just that. They love to talk about it. When it comes to action it is a whole different story.

Bill Frist trying to downplay someone else on National Security is like Jack Abramoff teaching an ethics course. Frist was a supporter of the Dubai ports deal while Democrats and a majority of Republicans realized it exposed our nation to a greater threat. Frist didn’t care. He wanted to stand by Bush with his typical blind eye.

What’s good about the Republicans using this typical “fear” tactic is that America is tired of it. We are tired of constantly being told we should be afraid. The Republicans do that yet 5 years after 9/11 and still, only 5% of the containers at our ports are inspected. Again, they talk but take no action. All they have done is strip away our civil liberties in the name of safety while running our country into an irreversible debt with a very bleak future. To turn that around we need someone like Tom Daschle.

So get ready because 2008 is shaping up to be one hell of a year. Democrats need to get united and stand behind a great choice for President. The Republicans are starting to do that so the Democrats better do the same.
